To The Manor Born: Bankrupt Baby Wants Your Bucks!

A resident of Michigan’s Livingston County, Mike Detmer is the newest would-be politician to enter the “I Want To Be A Big Lying Douche Just Like Donald Trump” contest.

Well, Detmer’s got the prevaricating down pat, and he’s a bit of a “fortunate son”, just like his idol.

In recent news stories, the 46-year-old Detmer, a Howell resident, variously claimed to be a “licensed real estate agent in Livingston County” (he’s not, the license lapsed on October 31, 2021), and boasts that after graduating from Oakland University, he worked as “a loan originator for a mortgage broker based in Bloomfield Hills and quickly worked his way up to Vice President of the company”.

But Detmer neglects to mention that his late father, Michael J. Detmer, formed the Michigan mortgage company, and later filed incorporation papers for the Kansas expansion.

Dude, it’s easy to climb the ladder when you start near the top rung.

According to Detmer’s origin story, he “grew up in a small town in northern Michigan near Traverse City where his parents owned a real estate company and a Christmas tree business. It was as a boy and young man in northern Michigan where he began to learn the value of hard work by spending his days in the Christmas tree fields when not in school.”

But a search of Grand Traverse County’s Register of Deeds records reveals Detmer’s parents had extensive land holdings, including those producing oil and gas lease revenue.

Simple Christmas tree folk?

I think not.

In addition, Detmer’s parents transferred property to him via a Quit Claim deed while he was still an adolescent, including two parcels sold in 2001 for nearly $370,000.

The Detmer family moved from the Traverse City area to Rochester Hills, and in 1991, Detmer’s father graduated from Thomas Cooley Law School and received his Michigan law license on May 15, 1991. He was admitted to the Florida bar on January 20, 1992.

Just simple folk, right?

So you’d think that having had an attorney for a father, Detmer would not try to play fast and loose with his 2016 bankruptcy filing.

Well, that’s a story…for tomorrow.

Here’s a preview: in January 2016, Mike Detmer sold a Port St. Lucie, Florida, home (below) for way more than he’d paid for it. And even though the Florida property taxes were paid over the four years Detmer owned the home, he suddenly had a cash crunch.

And where is that 2016 income tax return, anyway?
